Macallan Meets Mexico - A New Whiskey Journey Inspired by Tradition and Taste
The Macallan is now moving towards Mexico with their "Distill Your World" range. This initiative is a collaboration with the world-renowned restaurant, El Celler de Can Roca, run by the Roca brothers in Girona, Spain. This marks the third edition of The Macallan's series, with previous cities having included London and New York.
At the heart of each edition is a journey that a Macallan whiskey maker and one of the Roca brothers take to a chosen country. This journey serves as the inspiration for the flavors highlighted in that edition.
The Roca brothers, Joan, Josep and Jordi, are behind El Celler de Can Roca. This restaurant has earned three Michelin stars for its unique interpretation of Catalan cuisine. It has also been voted "World's Best Restaurant" twice by Restaurant Magazine, in 2013 and 2015, and consistently ranks among the world's top eateries.
For this "Distill Your World Mexico" edition, whiskey maker Diane Stuart has taken the lead. She has chosen a mix of European and American oak casks, a common choice, to celebrate the annual Mexican Life Celebration.
The official tasting notes for this edition are as follows:
Aroma:
Sugared pan de muerto bread, creamy vanilla, sweet pineapple, fragrant marigold flowers and a touch of fresh green coriander.
Taste:
A rich sweetness characterized by orange oil, chocolatey Mexican mole and charred pineapple.
Aftertaste:
Sweet with a subtle hint of charred coal.
Alcohol percentage: 48%
This whiskey aims to encapsulate the spirit and essence of the vibrant Mexican tradition, drawing inspiration from the Roca brothers and the expertise of the Macallan Whiskey Mastery Team.
