Instead of a dominant and powerful smoke profile, the smoke here is balanced and elegant, designed to complement rather than overpower. Taste and aroma – balanced smoke and Nordic nuances
On the nose, you are met with soft campfire smoke and toasted grain, which immediately sets the tone for the whisky's character. The smoke is rounded and inviting, without the sharp or medicinal notes often found in more classic smoked whiskies.

The grain used in the production comes from local farms, and both the peat and heather, used for the smoking, are also locally sourced. This gives the whisky a special Nordic expression, where the smoke takes on the character of soft campfire rather than strong medicinal smoke.
The idea behind RØG is to create a whisky where the origin and raw materials can be clearly tasted. It is a modern interpretation of smoked whisky, where Danish craftsmanship and nature play a central role in the final expression.
Production and craftsmanship – tradition meets precision
The production of Stauning RØG is based on traditional methods and an uncompromising approach to quality. The grain is 100% floor-malted at the distillery, where it is turned by hand and dried in a kiln over heather and peat, which imparts the characteristic smoke.
The distillation takes place in 24 small, direct-fired copper pot stills, where the whisky is double-distilled to achieve a clean and complex spirit. This method provides great control over the process and contributes to the whisky's depth and structure.
After distillation, the whisky is aged in American oak casks, which add warmth and structure. It is then finished in Madeira casks, which contribute softness, fruity notes and extra complexity. The whisky has no added colour and is not chill-filtered, which preserves its natural character.
World Whiskies Awards 2026 – international recognition
Stauning RØG has achieved significant international recognition and was named Category Winner in the “Taste” category at the World Whiskies Awards 2026. This award underlines the whisky's high quality and well-balanced flavour profile.
The judging panel's tasting notes highlight, among other things, smoky notes that create interest and coherence throughout the tasting experience. In addition, nuances such as raspberry jam, herbaceous tones and peat are mentioned, which together provide a complex and lingering finish.
The award is a clear seal of quality and confirms Stauning RØG as a whisky that not only stands out for its style, but can also compete with the best international releases.

Serving suggestions – how to bring out the best
Stauning RØG can be enjoyed neat to experience its full complexity and balance. Served at room temperature, the whisky opens up to reveal both the smoky and the sweet nuances, which develop in the glass.
For a lighter and more refreshing serve, it can also be used in a RØG Highball. Here, 5 cl of Stauning RØG is combined with 15 cl of chilled sparkling water over a large ice cube and topped with a strip of lemon peel. The result is a light, elegant drink, where the discreet smoke is allowed to interact with the freshness of the citrus and carbonation.
This versatility makes Stauning RØG suitable both as a sipping whisky and as a base in simple, clean cocktails, where its character is still allowed to come through clearly.
