Glenmorangie Distillery – Scottish Whiskey Heritage from the Heart of the Highlands

Glenmorangie: The Highland icon with proud traditions

In the rolling landscape of the northern Highlands, Glenmorangie Distillery looks out over the Dornoch Firth, where the production of spirits has roots stretching back to the Middle Ages. Here, where the mist rolls in from the North Sea, Glenmorangie has made its home and built on a history marked by both passion and precision.

A legacy from 1843, and long before

Glenmorangie was officially founded in 1843 by William Matheson, but the area had long been known for home-distilled whisky. The distillery was built on the site of an old brewery, which led to the choice of taller copper stills, originally intended for brewing beer, that remain part of Glenmorangie's characteristic process.

The tallest stills

One of Glenmorangie's most remarkable features is its 8-metre-tall stills, the tallest in Scotland. Only the lightest and most delicate vapours reach the top, giving Glenmorangie whiskies their characteristic floral and elegant taste. This process is central to the distillery's signature: a soft, complex and fruity whisky with great finesse.

The importance of wood: the wood finishing pioneers

Glenmorangie was among the first to experiment systematically with 'wood finishing', maturing whisky in different types of cask after the main maturation. This has added new depth to its range, with sherry, Madeira and port casks among those used to create rich and varied flavour profiles. The distillery thus helped shape an entire direction in modern Scotch whisky.

Sustainability and nature conservation

Today Glenmorangie also takes responsibility for the nature around it, including active work to protect the nearby Dornoch Firth, a unique marine ecosystem. Expertise in spirits is combined with respect for the Scottish landscape, making the distillery much more than just a whisky producer.

If you are in the Scottish Highlands, a stop at Glenmorangie Distillery is a great opportunity to get closer to both history and craftsmanship.
