TOP 3% OF WINES IN THE WORLD

Château Canet Alternative Chardonnay is an ambitious take on how far Chardonnay can reach in the Languedoc. The wine is created with inspiration from the great white Burgundies, but based on the southern French terroir around Minervois. Here, sun-ripened grapes are combined with calcareous soil, cool winds from the Atlantic, and a vinification process that gives the Chardonnay depth, creamy texture, and freshness.
Alternative is made from 100% Chardonnay and has undergone 12 months of aging in French oak barrels. This gives the wine a distinctive but well-integrated oak character, where ripe white fruit meets citrus, toasted nuances, almonds, and vanilla. At the same time, the crisp acidity ensures that the wine never becomes heavy.
This is a Chardonnay for the wine lover who seeks more complexity and structure than in a classic, fruity white wine. The elegant balance between fruit, oak, and minerality makes Château Canet Alternative an obvious choice both at the dinner table and for special occasions.
Taste & Aroma
In the glass, Château Canet Alternative Chardonnay appears with a light golden color. The nose is immediately characterized by fresh and ripe white fruit, where peach and pear, in particular, give the wine a juicy and inviting opening. The aromatic expression then becomes more complex with citrus notes, especially grapefruit, which adds a fresh and slightly bitter quality.
The 12 months in French oak barrels also add clear but elegant secondary aromas. Toasted bread, almonds, and vanilla provide depth and a warm, creamy dimension to the Chardonnay's fruity base character. However, the oak influence is not the only focal point; the wine retains a distinct freshness and minerality.
On the palate, Alternative is full-bodied and creamy with a round texture, but the fresh acidity keeps the structure tight and precise. Mid-palate, the wine feels soft and generous, while the finish becomes fresher and persistent. The combination of 100% Chardonnay, calcareous terroir, and French oak creates a wine with both volume, elegance, and length.
What does it pair with?
Château Canet Alternative Chardonnay is first and foremost a wine for food. Its combination of fullness, acidity, and oak-aged nuances makes it suitable for dishes where a lighter, more neutral white wine might easily disappear.
It pairs excellently with fish and shellfish, especially when the ingredients are prepared with butter, cream, or creamy sauces. For example, try it with oven-baked or grilled white fish, lobster, crab, scallops, or other delicate seafood dishes. The Chardonnay's freshness can cut through the richness, while the creamy texture complements the fullness of the sauce.
Poultry with sauce is also an obvious match. Here, the wine's structure and oak notes work well with both roasted and creamy elements. For a more luxurious occasion, it can be served with foie gras on toast, where the wine's freshness creates balance for the rich dish.
Alternative is also a strong choice when simply opening a bottle for good company. Serve it at around 10°C, and feel free to give the wine some time in the glass so the complex oak and fruit aromas have the opportunity to unfold.
Château Canet – Minervois with an eye for elegance
Château Canet is located by the village of Rustiques in Minervois in the Languedoc and is run as a family estate with about 115 hectares of vineyards. The family behind the estate spent 15 years in Burgundy before settling in Languedoc-Roussillon in 2005. Their experience from Burgundy has left a clear mark on the house's approach to wine, where elegance, balance, and terroir play a central role.
The vineyards are situated on soil with lime and clay and are influenced by both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. The cool westerly wind, the Cers, helps to moderate the heat and aids in preserving acidity and freshness in the grapes. It is precisely this combination that makes it possible to produce white wines with both ripe fruit and a cooler, more elegant profile.
Château Canet also works purposefully with sustainable wine production and follows, among other things, the Terra Vitis principles as well as HVE certification. Alternative Chardonnay is a good example of the house's ambition to combine modern technique, classic craftsmanship, and the potential of the Languedoc.
