Navy Strength Gin with West Jutland Power and Maritime Roots
Stauning Navy Strength Gin is the uncompromising full-proof expression of Stauning Danish Dry Gin, bottled at an impressive 57.3% ABV for greater intensity, richer texture and significantly more botanical concentration. The recipe remains identical to Stauning’s award-winning 43% gin, but the higher strength allows every botanical to make a more pronounced contribution.
Classic juniper and bright citrus form the backbone, while coriander seed, angelica root, orris root and liquorice root add spice, structure and depth. The unmistakably local touch comes from pine shoots harvested around Stauning, introducing a subtle evergreen character that connects the gin directly to its West Jutland surroundings.
The result is powerful without being aggressive: a clean, aromatic and full-bodied Danish Navy Strength Gin where the elevated alcohol level is used to amplify flavour, mouthfeel and length rather than simply add heat.
One-Shot and Direct Fire
Stauning Navy Strength Gin follows the principles of traditional London Dry production and is made with a strong focus on classic distilling techniques. Juniper, coriander seed, angelica root, orris root, liquorice root, lemon peel and locally harvested pine shoots are macerated in alcohol for 24 hours, allowing their essential oils and aromas to infuse the spirit.
All botanicals are then distilled together using the traditional one-shot method in small copper pot stills heated directly by flame. During distillation, only the heart of the run – the cleanest and most aromatic section – is selected for the final gin, while the heads and tails are discarded.
Bottling at 57.3% preserves more of the original distillate, resulting in greater viscosity, stronger botanical expression and a noticeably longer finish than a conventionally bottled gin.
Juniper, Citrus and Pine
The aroma is concentrated and precise. Juniper takes the lead, followed by fresh lemon peel, gentle spice and light herbal notes. In the background, locally harvested pine shoots add a subtle evergreen quality that complements rather than overwhelms the juniper.
On the palate, the gin is rich and silky with a powerful core of juniper and citrus. Coriander and aromatic roots add depth and warming spice, while liquorice root helps round out the texture. The pine shoots reinforce the resinous character of the juniper and provide a clear connection to the landscape surrounding Stauning.
Despite the substantial 57.3% ABV, the spirit remains impressively balanced. The finish is long and aromatic, leaving persistent notes of citrus, juniper, herbs, pine and gentle warming spice.
Serving Suggestions
Navy Strength Gin is particularly well suited to classic cocktails where gin needs enough intensity to remain clearly present alongside other ingredients. Use it in a dry Martini, a powerful Negroni or a fresh Gimlet, where its high strength adds aroma, structure and length.
It also makes an excellent Gin & Tonic. Because the spirit carries more flavour, a relatively modest measure can still deliver considerable aromatic impact. A clean, neutral tonic allows the juniper, citrus and pine character to remain at the centre of the drink.
A Tribute to Stauning's Maritime Heritage
The Navy Strength name is about more than alcohol percentage. Stauning is a small West Jutland town with longstanding ties to Ringkøbing Fjord and the North Sea, and this expression pays tribute to that maritime heritage.
Before accurate alcohol-measuring instruments existed, naval tradition held that spirit strength could be tested using gunpowder. The powder was soaked with spirit and ignited; if it could still burn, the alcohol was considered “proof”, roughly corresponding to 57% ABV or slightly higher. Bottling this gin at 57.3% therefore creates a direct historical reference to seafaring traditions while connecting Stauning’s gin to its own coastal home.
About Stauning Whisky
Stauning Whisky was founded in 2005 by nine friends in the small West Jutland village of Stauning. From the beginning, their ambition was to create spirits with a distinctly local identity using traditional craftsmanship while remaining willing to challenge established conventions.
The distillery is best known for Danish whisky made with locally grown grain, floor malting and small direct-fired copper stills. The same hands-on philosophy is evident in its gin production, where one-shot distillation, copper pot stills and locally harvested botanicals play central roles.
Stauning’s location between agricultural land, Ringkøbing Fjord and the North Sea continues to shape its identity. Navy Strength Gin brings these influences together in an intense and unmistakably Danish expression.
